Tourism with VUDA at Vizag

Visakhapatnam, described as the City of Destiny, is becoming a destination of global tourism on the east coast of India. The un-tired continuous efforts of the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) transforming the port city in to a tourist paradise with rich eco-environs and must-see destinations. Apart from the spots promoted by the State tourism Department, VUDA has been developed a number of tourism projects on its own. Being the statutory Urban Development Authority, comprising a jurisdiction of 1721 Sq.Km in the districts of Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram (both are having historical significance and heritage), it is involving and initiating in the promotion of tourism to attract tourists from all over the globe.

In fact the metro has all the trappings of well-developed tourist destinations like Singapore and the Government has time and determination to put Vizag on the international tourist map. Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority took a lead role in developing and promotion of tourist sites in and around the city. It is VUDA that held media conferences in other prominent metros like Delhi, Bangalore etc., and draw the attention of the people towards the tourist attractions in the
City of Destiny.

The Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority is pioneering in carving natural beauties in the form of tourist spots to the Port City.
The ultimate aim of VUDA is to make Vizag not only be the city of destination, but would also be a city of delight.

Here is the gist of some of the tourism projects promoted and maintained by the VUDA

Kailasagiri- A never ending enchantment:

It is one of the prominent hill top parks with panoramic sea view on the East Coast. The divine view from the hilltop accompanies devotional overtones as the Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi sits ever so peacefully as if at the Manasa Sarovar in the great Himalayas. One can view the entire city of Visakhapatnam from the top of this Eco-Rich hill. Located on a picturesque hill with enchanting panoramic sea view, Kailasagiri is really an out standing tourist spots in Andhra Pradesh. It is the Queen among the tourist locations in the City of Destiny. The hill park developed by VUDA covers 380 acres of land with exciting landscape gardens consisting rich flora and tropical trees. Situated at an altitude of 360 ft., the hill park gives fascinating views of sun kissed beaches on one side and the lush green forests on the other side beside an enthralling view of the bustling metropolis of Visakhapatnam.

Kailasagiri is a favourite location among the filmmakers all over India. Besides the eye-catching and holy statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, the hilltop has many wonderful attractions like the Titanic viewpoint, floral clock, Shanku-Chakra Namas of Lord Venkateswara of Tirupati, Gliding point, delicious food courts and so on. The floral clock one of the biggest of India with a diameter of 10 ft. There is Shanti Ashram on the top of the hill, where one can earn lots of peace to their body and mind by spending time in meditation. A number of amazing view points are developed all around the hilltop. A capsule lift has been provided to enthral the visitors to view the beauty of blue seawaters and the city along with stunning beauties of the hilltop from further heights.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has awarded Kailasagiri as "the Best Tourist Spot" in 2003. The hilltop is well connected by all means of transport through ghat road Facing the City and seawaters. Two stairways are provided for pedestrians Pleasant weather prevails throughout the year on the hilltop

An exclusive Butterfly Park, Highest Manmade Water Falls are proposed projects on the hilltop. On an average around 3 lakh Indian and Foreign tourists visit this spot every year. It became a must-see place for all the visitors coming to Visakhapatnam including State guests and other VIPs. Above all Kailasagiri is the first location where plastic use is banned and implemented strictly to protect and promote healthy eco-balance.

VUDA has declared the hill a plastic-free zone. Tourists are not insisted and imposed rules to follow orders on plastic ban but educated and convinced to practice it voluntarily and succeeded to that effect.

Rope Way-Connecting the heights:

An adding feather to the beauty of Kailasagiri, the Ropeway is the third route to the Kailasagiri hilltop. The enthralling air journey was formally inaugurated on
05-05-2004. The ropeway if the first of its kind in Andhra Pradesh as well as in the entire coastal India. The visitors to Kailasagiri can have a 360-degree view
from the fibre- glass cabins while travelling up and down the 375-meter ropeway.

Pilgrims visiting Lord Venkateswara's shrine at Tirupathi-Tirumala may not get luxury of traveling in a ropeway, but Vizagites and its visitors can reach the feet of the giant-sized idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi on the top of Kailasagiri. Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority, under the Vice-Chairmanship of Dasari Sreenivasulu initiated speedy steps to complete the project in a stipulated period to earn tourism identity to Visakhapatnam at global level. Suspended 4 mts. to 10 mts. above ground, tourists can reach the hilltop near telescope viewpoint from the foothill close to the beach near Appughar junction in less than three minutes. The Kolkatta based Conveyor Ropeway Services Pvt.Ltd has eructed the Ropeway on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis at a cost of Rs.3.00 crores. Eructation of towers and imported rope attracts the tourists. The project has 8 six-seater transparent cabins for up and down journey. Base station and upper stations facilitate passengers to embark and alight for the amazing altitude journey.

The Ropeway while providing a panoramic view of the beach within limits from Dolphin's Nose to Appughar and an aerial view of the concrete jungle with splashes of greenery would be the forerunner for the hilltop Circular Train Project grounded by VUDA to provide a bird's eye view of the entire Visakhapatnam with its resplendent hill-valley-beach ambience.

Circular Toy Train- The glamour for Vizag Tourism (Coming up):

VUDA is adding a unique attraction to the most beautiful hilltop i.e., Kailasagiri and also to the tourism glamour of Visakhapatnam. It has initiated the Circular Toy Train Project to provide the joy of hilltop ride. The glass train makes rounds the Kailasagiri hilltop, 400 ft above mean sea level. It runs on a length of 2.75 km narrow gauge track at a speed of 15-20 kmph. The Rs.4.00 crore Projects is a joint venture of VUDA with the Hyderabad based Sarada Roadways on a build-own-transfer (BOT) basis.

Tourist places such as Darjeeling, Shimla, Ooty and few others in India have such trains at ground level, but nowhere near a height of about 400 ft mean sea level. The see-through train would have state-of-art equipment and technological assistance from the Integral Coach Factory at Permbudur would be taken. The circular train would be able to accommodate 70-80 passengers per trip round the hill. One can enjoy the breathtaking view of the sea and the picturesque hills travelling the circular train. The work is under progress.

Hill Top Road :

Hill Top Road-The pilgrim path: The 11.6 km length road laid all along the top of the hill connects the NH-5 to the historical temple town Simhachalam, where the Lord Narasimha Swamy, one among the ten incarnations of the Lord Vishnu blesses the mankind. The picturesque road stands one of the prominent attractions for the City of Destiny. It provides the joy of not only a thrilling ride at heights but also amazing "bird's eye" view of the city of destiny and mesmerizing surroundings of nature on both sides. A joint venture funded by the Simhachalam Devasthanam, MPLADS and VUDA, its formation and development has been taken up by VUDA. Protecting environment and existing greenery has been prioritized while adding other traditional attractions to the road. Plans for the protection of the wild life and for preservation and promotion of water resources in natural way were also incorporated and initiated. The standards of Indian Road Research Institute have been adopted and implemented in laying the hill top road stressing more and more on safety and security for the vehicular as well as pedestrian traffic.

Above all VUDA is committed to develop the hill top road to Simhachalam Devasthanam into a pilgrim tourist spot with beautification in traditional way. Accordingly ten "Silathoranamas" (Stone arches), appears with Dasavataras (ten incarnations) of the almighty, Lord Vishnu are proposed on the road. Sculptures of national reputation will be engaged with the job of decorating the hill top road with stone arches depicting the "avatharas" of Lord Vishnu. No doubt, the hill top road would become the most populous and holy path, taking the pilgrims and tourists to the shrine of Lord Narasimha Swamy.

Sandram-Lahiri..Lahiri…Coastal Cruise for a jolly ride on seawaters: Ready for launching

Pioneering in the promotion of tourism in and around Visakhapatnam, VUDA has initiated this innovative and unique project, for a jolly ride in seawaters. This Bay cruise is a very rare and splendid opportunity that the tourists can enjoy boating in Bay as well as city view from the Bay waters. Sagar Rakshak-I, a patrol vessel owned by the Department of Fisheries has been taken over on long lease by VUDA for the purpose. The vessel was modified with a variety of attractions and facilities to cater the needs of the tourists. Along with seating arrangements for the tourists, recreational and other facilities on board would be added. Once the project comes true, local cruise trips will also be materialized. The project is awaiting for launch.

Vizag will no doubt be an exclusive tourist destination in the country to offer the pleasure of a ride in the blue waters of the sea to visitors coming from all over the globe. The amazing cruise boat with two-400HP engines carries a maximum of 25 passengers, excluding the crew on board.

Visakha-Bheemili Beach Road- The Tourist Corridor:

Realizing the need to develop infrastructure for promotion of tourism at global level, VUDA has taken up the widening of existing road between Visakha and Bheemili into a four-lane corridor. This project not only provides state of art transport facilities between the two major tourist port locations, but also earns global recognition to tourism at Visakhapatnam. The 26 km road goes all along the beach from Visakhapatnam to Bheemili. The work is in progress. The first 2km stretch has been completed with all beautifications.
